Strengthening of Malawi’s Microfinance Sector (2019-2020)

Our first ever partnership in Malawi was established in a Memorandum of Understanding with our project partner Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in November 2019 through its Agribusiness Management Department (ABM). The ABM department collaborated with DSIK, to enhance the skills and capacities of staff members in Malawi's microfinance sector and support small business development.

Due to the pandemic and associated travel risks, DSIK hosted webinars in collaboration with LUANAR’s ABM department, engaging Microfinance Institutions on topics such as microfinance principles, risk management, and risk assessment in a pilot phase. DSIK, further supported the Department in the development of a new Bachelor Studies in Business as a way of contributing to capacitate future employees of Microfinance Institutions. Furthermore, LUANAR, together with DSIK carried out a first Training of Trainers aiming at fostering financial inclusion and business growth for small businesses including farmers.

Promotion of Small-Scale Entrepreneurship in Southern Africa (2021-2023)

Our journey in the Promotion of Small-Scale Entrepreneurship in Malawi began in January 2021. We embarked on various phases and activities to create a lasting impact. In this project, our work expanded through an extensive partnership model that leveraged the strengths of key institutions. Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) continued as a vital partner, contributing its expertise in agriculture and entrepreneurship education. The Bachelor Studies program developed in collaboration with the Agribusiness Management was rolled out for the first time with great success.

The New Apostolic Church Relief Organization (NACRO) served as the implementing partner, ensuring the practical application of project objectives, particularly within farming communities. In 2022, we signed an MOU with the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), solidifying a crucial partnership that enabled enhanced access to capital for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This partnership supported RBM’s efforts in fostering financial inclusion, providing vital access to financial services for aspiring entrepreneurs. DSIK also partnered with Malawi Microfinance Network (MAMN), the umbrella organization for Microfinance Institutions. The partnership between MAMN & DSIK supported the contribution to the capacity-building of MFI staff members.

DSIK facilitated a partnership between LUANAR and MAMN, strengthening collaboration. The collaboration focused on providing tailored short courses for Microfinance Institution (MFI) staff which includes LUANAR's academic strength and MAMN’s microfinance expertise.

Strengthening Small-Scale Entrepreneurship for a Social and Environmental Transformation and Economic Development in Southern Africa (2023-2026)

Our latest project phase, launched in August 2023, which builds on past successes while incorporating new focus areas such as environmental sustainability and broader social transformation. Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) continue to be central partners in this phase, supported by new collaborations with the Malawi Microfinance Network (MAMN) and other stakeholders. The MAMN partnership aims to enhance the network’s role in implementing the National Financial Literacy and Capacity Strategy and improving access to loans for MSMEs across Malawi.

Our implementing partners, New Apostolic Church Relief Organization (NACRO), Liwonde Community Development Training Centre (LCDTC), and Youth for Inclusive and Sustainable Development (YFIASD), are working on the ground to ensure economic participation is inclusive, particularly for marginalized groups. The introduction of the MCR simulation game during this phase is a key innovation, helping entrepreneurs to practice and develop essential business skills in a low-risk environment. Additionally, the focus on environmental sustainability has been integrated into our business training, with entrepreneurs encouraged to adopt practices that are not only economically viable but also environmentally responsible.
